    Installing Claude Code on Windows in 2026: The Native Installer Walkthrough That Actually Works

    If you have spent any time in the Claude Code subreddit or the GitHub issues tracker in the last six months, you have seen the same Windows install problem cycle through every week. Someone runs the install command, the installer prints “successfully installed,” and then claude --version returns “is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet.” Then come the suggestions: switch to Git Bash, switch to WSL2, reinstall Node, blow away npm. Half of them are wrong for the current installer. This guide is the one I wish existed when I set up Claude Code on a fresh Windows 11 machine this month.

    What changed in 2026: the native installer is now the default

    Anthropic shipped a native installer in 2025 that removed the Node.js dependency entirely. As of May 2026 it is the recommended path on every platform, and npm install of @anthropic-ai/claude-code is still supported but is no longer the primary method Anthropic tests and updates. The native installer downloads a single binary, drops it in ~/.local/bin, registers it on your PATH, and auto-updates in the background.

    What this means in practice on Windows: you do not need Node, you do not need npm, and you do not need WSL2 unless you specifically want a Linux toolchain. PowerShell on Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) is enough.

    The two commands that actually work

    Open Windows PowerShell — not the x86 version, not Git Bash, not Command Prompt. The x86 entry runs as a 32-bit process and will fail on a 64-bit machine. Git Bash does not support the TTY features Claude Code’s interactive CLI needs, so you will hit the “Raw mode is not supported” error before you finish authenticating.

    Then run:

    irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex

    That is the entire install. irm is Invoke-RestMethod, iex is Invoke-Expression, and the script handles the binary download, PATH update, and shell hooks. When it finishes, close the terminal and open a new PowerShell window. This is the step everyone skips. The PATH change applies to new shells only — your current session still has the old PATH and will not find the binary.

    In the new window:

    claude --version

    You should see a version string. Then run claude with no arguments from any project directory. The CLI opens your default browser, asks you to sign in to your Anthropic account, and authorizes the local install. Setup, end to end, is under five minutes on a clean machine.

    You need a paid account — the free tier does not include Claude Code

    This catches new users every week. The free Claude.ai plan gets you chat on web, iOS, Android, and desktop. It does not get you Claude Code. To use the terminal CLI you need one of:

    A Pro subscription at $20 per month (or $17 per month billed annually). A Max 5x subscription at $100 per month. A Max 20x subscription at $200 per month. A Team Premium seat at $100 per seat per month annual or $125 monthly, minimum five seats. Or API credits — new API accounts get a small free credit pool to test with, but you are billed per token from there.

    Pro and Max draw from the same token budget as your regular Claude chat usage. The Pro window is roughly 44,000 tokens per five-hour rolling window, which third-party tracking puts at 10 to 40 prompts depending on codebase complexity. Max 5x and 20x scale that linearly. If you are evaluating whether to upgrade, the Pro window will tell you within a week — you either hit the cap during real work or you do not.

    The five errors you will hit, and what fixes them

    “claude is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet.” Your PATH was not updated, or you did not open a new terminal. First, close PowerShell and reopen. If the error persists, the install location exists but your user PATH does not reference it. Run this in PowerShell:

    Close the terminal again, open a new one, and claude --version should work.

    “Raw mode is not supported.” You are running Claude Code inside Git Bash. Git Bash does not provide the TTY interface the CLI needs. Switch to Windows PowerShell. Everything you would do in Git Bash you can do in PowerShell; you just need to use Windows path syntax inside the prompt.

    Microsoft Store popup interrupts installation. A popup saying “Get an app to open this ‘claude’ link” sometimes appears during the install on Windows 11. This is a known issue tracked in Anthropic’s GitHub. Dismiss the popup, then re-run the install command. If it persists, install Git for Windows first — the installer registers a couple of URL handlers that resolve the popup.

    Duplicate npm and native installs. If you previously installed via npm and later ran the native installer, you have two binaries on PATH. The native one wins on some shells and the npm one wins on others, which produces confusing version mismatches. Remove the npm install:

    npm uninstall -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code

    Then verify with where.exe claude in PowerShell. Only one path should come back.

    “Invalid code” during OAuth. The browser-based login generates a one-time code that you paste back into the terminal. The code expires fast and is sensitive to copy-paste truncation. Press Enter to retry, complete the browser flow, and paste the code immediately — do not let it sit in your clipboard while you check email.

    What to do in the first session

    Once claude --version returns and the OAuth flow completes, run claude from inside a real project directory — not a fresh empty folder. Claude Code reads context from the surrounding repo, and the first thing it does in a useful session is index files and look for a .clauderules or CLAUDE.md. If you start in an empty directory the first interaction feels useless because there is nothing to ground the model on.

    If you want to lock to a specific model rather than the default, the current strings as of May 2026 are claude-opus-4-7 for the flagship, claude-sonnet-4-6 for the workhorse, and claude-haiku-4-5-20251001 for the fast tier. Sonnet 4.6 is what you want for almost all coding work — it is 30 to 50 percent faster than Sonnet 4.5 and ships with a 1M context window. Reserve Opus 4.7 for the hardest agentic refactors; it eats tokens noticeably faster.

    The setup is not the hard part

    Most of the Windows pain in the Claude Code ecosystem comes from people following install guides written for the npm-era CLI, then layering troubleshooting from the WSL2-era guides on top of that, then asking why nothing works. The current path is one PowerShell command, a new terminal, and a browser login. If you hit one of the five errors above, the fix is short. If you hit something else, the troubleshooting docs at code.claude.com cover it — most novel issues turn out to be PATH or shell-choice problems in a slightly different costume.

    The next thing to figure out is not installation. It is whether your Pro window survives a real week of work, and whether your team needs Premium seats. That math is what determines the actual cost of Claude Code on Windows — not whether the binary runs.

    Installing Claude Code is the easy part. Deploying it across a team in production is the part most guides skip.

    Most of the published guidance on installing Claude Code stops at “run npm install -g and you’re done.” That’s enough for a developer playing on a laptop. It is not enough for a team that wants to run Claude Code in production — in CI, in shared infrastructure, behind a firewall, with cost controls, and with the new Agent SDK billing model that takes effect June 15, 2026.

    This article is the production deployment guide. Triple-sourced against Anthropic’s own Claude Code documentation, the github.com/anthropics/claude-code-action repo, and Anthropic’s announced June 15 billing model. Verified May 15, 2026.

    The three install paths and which to pick

    Per Anthropic’s official Claude Code docs, there are three supported ways to install Claude Code. They produce the same underlying binary but make sense in different operational contexts.

    1. Standalone installer. A native installer for macOS, Windows, and Linux that drops the Claude Code binary in a system path. This is the cleanest install for individual developers — no Node.js required, no npm dependency, predictable upgrade behavior. Use this on workstations where the operator owns the machine.

    2. npm global package. npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code. Requires Node.js 18 or later. Pulls the same native binary as the standalone installer through a per-platform optional dependency, then a postinstall step links it into place. Use this when you already manage developer tools through npm and want one less install path to track. Supported platforms: darwin-arm64, darwin-x64, linux-x64, linux-arm64, linux-x64-musl, linux-arm64-musl, win32-x64, win32-arm64.

    3. Desktop app. A desktop-class application distributed via .dmg on macOS and MSIX/.exe on Windows. This is the path most teams will deploy to non-developer staff, and it integrates with enterprise device management tools like Jamf, Kandji, and standard Windows MSIX deployment.

    If you are deploying across a team larger than a handful of developers, mix-and-match: standalone or npm for engineering workstations, desktop for everyone else.

    The npm install gotchas worth knowing before you ship

    Two things in Anthropic’s official docs are worth flagging because they will save you from a whole class of bug reports later:

    Don’t use sudo. Anthropic’s setup documentation explicitly warns against sudo npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code. It can lead to permission issues and security risks. If you need a global install on a machine where your user can’t write to the npm prefix, fix the npm prefix first (point it at a user-writable directory) rather than escalating with sudo.

    Don’t use npm update for upgrades. The right command per Anthropic’s docs is npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code@latest. npm update -g respects the original semver range and may not move you to the newest release. This trips up CI pipelines that try to keep Claude Code current via update; they will sit on a stale version forever.

    Production deployment considerations

    The single most important piece of context for a production Claude Code deployment in 2026: the billing model changes on June 15, 2026.

    Before June 15, Claude Code interactive sessions and claude -p non-interactive runs both draw from your normal subscription usage limits. Starting June 15, interactive Claude Code keeps using subscription limits as before, but claude -p and direct Agent SDK usage move to a separate per-user monthly Agent SDK credit pool ($20 Pro, $100 Max 5x, $200 Max 20x, $20-$100 Team, up to $200 Enterprise).

    For teams running Claude Code in CI, in cron jobs, in shell scripts, in GitHub Actions workflows — anywhere the trigger is automated rather than a human — this changes the economics.     Three other production considerations:

    Network configuration. Behind a corporate firewall, you’ll need to allowlist Anthropic’s API endpoints, configure proxy settings, and potentially route through an LLM gateway. Anthropic’s network configuration documentation covers the specifics.

    Enterprise device deployment. Per Anthropic’s official docs, the desktop app distributes through standard enterprise tools — Jamf and Kandji on macOS via the .dmg installer, MSIX or .exe on Windows. If your IT team already has a deployment workflow for similar developer tools, Claude Code drops into it without anything special.

    API key management. If your team uses Claude Developer Platform API keys instead of (or alongside) subscription auth, manage them like any other production secret — vault them, rotate them, scope them per environment, never check them into source control. This becomes more important after June 15 because API key usage is the recommended path for sustained shared automation, and unintended sprawl gets expensive.

    Claude Code GitHub Actions: the team multiplier

    The fastest way to get team-level value from Claude Code is the official GitHub Actions integration. From Anthropic’s documentation and the public github.com/anthropics/claude-code-action repository:

    The setup command. The cleanest install is to run /install-github-app from inside Claude Code in your terminal. It walks you through installing the GitHub App, configuring the required secrets, and wiring the workflow file. Manual setup also works — copy the workflow YAML from Anthropic’s docs and add the ANTHROPIC_API_KEY secret to your repository settings — but the install command saves the assembly time.

    The interaction model. Once installed, mentioning @claude in a pull request comment or an issue triggers Claude Code to act on the context. Claude can analyze the diff, create new PRs, implement features described in an issue, fix reported bugs, and respond to follow-up comments — all while adhering to whatever conventions you’ve documented in your repository’s CLAUDE.md file.

    Three use cases worth separating clearly.

    • Automated code review. Claude Code reads the diff on every pull request and posts inline comments flagging potential issues, suggesting improvements, or checking for convention violations. Highest signal-to-noise when path-filtered to relevant code only.
    • Issue-to-PR automation. Tag @claude on a well-described issue and Claude Code opens a PR implementing it. Best for small, well-scoped changes; less useful for architectural work.
    • On-demand assistance. Reviewers tag @claude mid-PR to ask questions, request explanations, or get a second opinion before merging. The most defensible use case because it keeps a human in the decision loop.

    Pick the use case that matches your team’s actual bottleneck. Running all three at once on every PR is the fastest way to burn through your usage budget without proportionate value.

    Cost expectations at team scale

    Independent reports as of May 2026 put Claude Code GitHub Actions PR-review costs at roughly $15-25 per month for a team of 3-5 developers doing 10-15 PRs per week, billed against a Claude Developer Platform API key at Sonnet rates. That figure should be treated as directional — your actual cost depends on PR size, how many tools you’ve configured, model selection, and how aggressive your path-filtering is.

    Two cost controls that materially change the math:

    • Path filters. Trigger Claude Code only on file changes that actually need review. Skipping documentation, generated files, and lockfile-only PRs cuts the bill substantially.
    • Concurrency limits. GitHub Actions concurrency settings prevent Claude Code from running multiple instances against the same branch at once. Without this, force-pushes and rapid-fire updates can stack runs.

    If you are running Claude Code on every PR across an active team, you will hit Anthropic API rate limits. The mitigation is path filters, concurrency limits, and batching — none of which are speculative; they are documented patterns.

    The CLAUDE.md file is not optional

    Whatever your install path and whatever your use case, the single piece of project context that has the largest effect on Claude Code’s output is the CLAUDE.md file at the root of your repository. This is where you tell Claude Code what your project is, what conventions to follow, what tools are available, what to avoid, and what success looks like.

    If you skip it, Claude Code is reasoning from the files alone — useful but generic. If you write it, Claude Code is reasoning with your team’s context and your specific codebase rules. The difference shows up in the first ten minutes of use.

    A practical CLAUDE.md for a production team usually includes: the project’s purpose and stack, naming conventions and folder structure, testing requirements, lint and format rules, deployment considerations, what kinds of changes need human review, and explicit prohibitions (“never commit migrations directly to main”, “always update X when you change Y”). Keep it concise — verbose CLAUDE.md files inflate every per-turn token cost across the team.

    What to actually do this week

    1. Pick your install path per role (standalone or npm for developers, desktop for everyone else).
    2. Install Claude Code on one workstation and run through the quickstart end-to-end before rolling to the team.
    3. Write a real CLAUDE.md for your primary repository before anyone uses Claude Code on it. Even a 100-line version is far better than nothing.
    4. If you’re running anything automated, read the Agent SDK billing change before June 15.
    5. If you want team-level value, install the GitHub Actions integration — but pick one use case (code review, issue-to-PR, or on-demand help), not all three at once.
    6. Set path filters and concurrency limits in your workflow before you put Claude Code on every PR.

    What’s the difference between the npm install and the standalone installer?

    None functionally — both install the same native binary. The npm path is convenient if you already manage developer tools through npm. The standalone installer is cleaner if you don’t want a Node.js dependency. Both upgrade through their own mechanism.

    I owe you an apology.

    Tygart Media has been publishing about Claude — Anthropic’s AI model — for months. We’ve written about its capabilities, its pricing, its API strings, how to use it, why it matters. We positioned ourselves as a resource for people who want to understand and use Claude intelligently.

    And some of what we published was wrong.

    Not intentionally. Not carelessly in the moment. But wrong in the way that happens when you’re moving fast, publishing at scale, and not building the right systems to catch your own errors. Model version numbers were stale. Pricing figures were outdated. API strings referenced models that had been retired. If you used our content to make a decision about Claude — about which model to use, what to pay, how to call the API — some of that information may have led you in the wrong direction.

    That’s unacceptable to me. And I want to tell you exactly what happened, exactly what I found, and exactly what I’ve built to make sure it never happens again.


    How We Found Out

    It didn’t start with our own discovery. It started with a message.

    Kristin Masteller, the General Manager of Mason County PUD No. 1, reached out on LinkedIn to flag inaccuracies in our local coverage — a different set of articles, but the same underlying problem: we had published with confidence about things we hadn’t verified carefully enough.

    That message hit differently than a normal correction request. Because it made me ask a harder question: if our local coverage had errors, what about our Claude coverage? We had 200+ posts. We were publishing multiple times per day. We had never built a systematic quality check.

    So we ran one.


    The Audit: What We Found

    We wrote a scanner that pulled every post from tygartmedia.com and ran each one through a quality gate checking for four categories of errors:

    • Category A: Stale model names (e.g., “Claude Haiku” with no version number, or references to Claude 3 models as current)
    • Category B: Wrong pricing (e.g., Haiku priced at $0.80/MTok when the actual price is $1.00/MTok)
    • Category C: Deprecated feature claims (features or behaviors that no longer apply)
    • Category D: Cross-site contamination (content from other publication contexts bleeding into Claude coverage)

    Out of 2,333 total posts on the site, 701 touched Claude or AI topics. Of those, 65 posts had violations — 121 individual errors in total.

    We auto-corrected 28 posts immediately — wrong model strings, wrong pricing, outdated API references. 18 posts with more complex issues are still flagged for human review. We are working through them.

    I’m not sharing this to perform humility. I’m sharing it because you deserve to know the scope of the problem, and because the methodology for finding it might be useful to you.


    What We Built to Fix It

    The audit was a one-time fix. What we actually needed was a system — something that would catch these errors before they went live, and keep our model information current automatically.

    Here’s what we built:

    1. The Claude Intelligence Desk

    A dedicated Notion page that serves as the single source of truth for all Claude model information across our entire content operation. It contains the current model truth table — every model name, API string, input/output price, context window, and status — verified against Anthropic’s live documentation.

    The rule is simple: before anyone writes, edits, or publishes any article that mentions Claude, they check this page. If the “Last Verified” timestamp is more than 12 hours old, they run a refresh before proceeding.

    2. The Claude Intelligence Scanner (Automated, Twice Daily)

    A scheduled task that runs at 6 AM and 6 PM Pacific every day. It fetches Anthropic’s models documentation page, compares the current model table to what’s in our Notion desk, and if anything has changed — a new model, a price change, a deprecation — it updates the desk automatically and flags it for human review.

    We will never again be caught publishing outdated Claude information because a model changed and we didn’t notice.

    3. Pre-Publish Quality Gates

    Every new Claude article now runs through the quality gate categories above before it goes live. Wrong model string → blocked. Outdated pricing → blocked. Deprecated claim → flagged.

    4. The Fix Log

    Every correction we make is logged with the post ID, the original wrong content, the correct replacement, and the date. Accountability in writing, not just in words.


    Why I’m Telling You All of This

    Because I think the way most AI content operations work is broken — and I think transparency about that is more useful than pretending we had it figured out.

    The standard playbook for AI content is: write fast, publish often, stay ahead of the news cycle. The problem is that AI — and especially Claude — moves so fast that “write fast” and “stay accurate” are genuinely in tension. Models change. Prices change. Features get added, deprecated, retired. If you’re not building systems to track that, you’re going to drift.

    We drifted. We caught it. We fixed it. And now I want to open up everything we built.

    The Claude Intelligence Desk methodology, the quality gate framework, the scanner architecture — I’m making all of it available.
