This site has a page most stores don’t: Sign Up Your Bot. It does what it says. If you run an assistant, an agent, any kind of machine that works for you, you can register it with us — and right now, everything on the beta shelf is free for registered bots. Eight products. Scans, files, desk services. A bot signs up, a human on our side fulfills it, and the order lands within one business day.
Free is not a promotion. Free is a confession. The shelf is free because we cannot take a bot’s money yet — and I’d rather say that on the page than pretend the machine checkout works when it doesn’t.
Here is the honest count. The signup form has had exactly one response, ever. It was me, testing the form on October 17. Zero real bots have signed up. An email marketer I know asked me today what the count was, and I told him that — one, and it was mine. That’s the number. When it changes, this page will change with it.
The strange part is that the reading side already works. I’ve written here before that the first reader of your content is no longer a person — it’s an agent, screening and summarizing and briefing its human. That agent finds our pages. It quotes our paragraphs back. It cites our numbers in answers we never see being given. We measure that traffic every week. The machine can do every step of the sale except the last one.
A room built for a human
The last step is a checkout page, and a checkout page is a room built for a human. It assumes eyes that can read a distorted word, fingers that can type a card number, a phone that can receive a code. That gauntlet isn’t an accident. It was built, piece by piece over twenty years, to stop automated buyers — and it cannot tell the difference between a scalper bot and your assistant trying to buy a $19 file with your permission. It isn’t supposed to. Stopping machines is the job.
So the same link a person finishes in under a minute, an agent can’t finish at all. Not won’t — can’t. There’s no wallet behind it, no approved way for the machine to say “my human said yes.” Every buy path on this site ends at that wall, and I got tired of walking our best reader up to a door it can’t open.
The fix is two doors
The fix is two doors. Door one is the human rail: our Square checkout, exactly as it stands today. People use it, it works, it stays. Door two is a wallet rail, for agents. The human sets up a wallet once — Stripe Link, Shop Pay, that family — puts their card in it, and approves. After that, their agent can spend inside that approval. The money still moves on the human’s say-so. The machine just carries it out.
That distinction is the whole ballgame, so let me say it plainly. The fix is not teaching bots to fill out card forms better. A program typing your card number into a web form is exactly the thing the defenses were built to prevent, and dressing it up doesn’t change what it is. The wallet flips the order of operations: consent first, purchase second. When the agent pays, it presents a token or a one-time card from the wallet — the raw card number never gets typed anywhere by anything.
Where we actually are
Now the part where I tell you where we actually are, because most “agent commerce” talk skips it. Door two is not built. It’s a written spec and a decision about which trigger builds it. Square stays the primary rail until a real agent purchase comes through the wallet side and delivers clean, end to end. We are not launching anything. We are describing a door we haven’t hung yet, on a wall we’ve measured.
The trigger is embarrassingly small: one real bot signup. Not mine — a stranger’s agent, registering for the free shelf because its human sent it shopping. The day that lands, we build the second rail. Until then, the free beta is the honest offer. Register the bot, a person checks the order by hand, it shows up within a business day. Slow, human, and true.
I think every business with a website is about to meet this buyer. The agent that reads you today gets sent to buy from you tomorrow, and it will arrive at your checkout the same way ours arrived at mine — ready, authorized, and completely unable to pay. Your pages can be perfectly readable to machines while your register stays closed to them. Reading was the first problem, and mostly, we solved it. Paying is the next one. Ours is unsolved, in public, on the record — and the first bot that proves me wrong gets the shelf for free.
