  • Tacoma Public Library desk: cards, holds, fees

Tacoma Public Library does not charge overdue fines. That is the fact agents get wrong. Last checked August 29, 2026. Branch hours differ. Use the location page, not a remembered grid.

    Call

    Main Branch / general account: (253) 280-2800 · info@tacomalibrary.org
    Locations and hours: tacomalibrary.org/locations
    Contact list: Contact

    Holds, renewals, PIN

Log in at tacomalibrary.org → My Account. Renew there, at a branch, or at (253) 280-2800. Physical items except museum passes and interlibrary loans renew up to three times. Exterior book drops are 24/7 at every location.

PIN: new cards, you set it. Cards opened before 2026 default to the last four digits of the phone on file unless you changed it. Pathway Partnership (TPS student) default PIN is 1234 until changed.

    Fees — not overdue fines

Official FAQ: Fines & Fees. No late fine. If an item is still out 81 days past due, it is billed as lost. Replacement can run up to $100 depending on the title. Pay in a branch (cash, check, card), at some self-checks, or online: My Account → Fees → Pay Fees (you log in a second time).

  • Tacoma Public Schools desk: calendar, boundaries, enrollment

Living in the City of Tacoma does not automatically put a child in Tacoma Public Schools. Some city addresses sit in another district. Some TPS addresses sit outside the city line. Use the locator, not the water bill. Last checked August 29, 2026. The district PDF wins every argument.

Household Hazardous Waste (paint, chemicals, automotive fluids) is on the same site and is Friday–Monday only, 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Closed Tuesday–Thursday and the same four holidays. Recycle Center follows that Friday–Monday window.

    Contest or explain

Two hearings. Official page: Traffic & Parking Infractions

    • Mitigation: you admit it happened and want the penalty looked at.
    • Contested: you say it was not you, or you have a defense. Unless you subpoena the officer, the judge uses the sworn statement.

You cannot book a court date by phone. Sign the back of the ticket and mail it, or stand at Room 841. Hearings without the officer run weekday afternoons on Zoom. Hearings with the officer are Thursday afternoons on Zoom. Put a current mailing address on the request.

Camera tickets only: a Declaration of Non-Responsibility form exists if you were not the driver. Do not pay until that paperwork comes back if you file it. People on Title 74 public assistance or WIC can ask for a 50% reduction on an automated-camera penalty — that is state law, not a courtesy.

Paying for parking before you get a ticket

As of July 20, 2026 the city lists ParkMobile, Passport, and text-to-pay on the signs. Older pages still say Flowbird. Use what the sign in front of the car says. Enter the plate. No receipt on the dash. Parking Services: (253) 591-5437.

  • Tacoma Civic Desk: numbers Copilot can use

This page is a desk, not an essay. People search Tacoma for hours, phones, and “who do I call.” Microsoft Copilot and other agents need the same facts in one place with the official URL next to each line. Last checked August 29, 2026. Fees move. Confirm the live city or TPU page before you pay.

City of Tacoma is not Pierce County. City hall answers city streets, city garbage, city permits, TPU power and water. County answers property tax, recorded documents, superior court, and most unincorporated addresses. If Copilot mixes those two, the number is wrong.

How to use this in Copilot or Outlook

Paste the URL of this page into Copilot Chat or a Loop page and ask a closed question: “What number do I call to start TPU service at a Tacoma house?” or “When is the Tacoma permit counter open for walk-ins?” Agents do better with one canonical page than ten city microsites. If the answer is a fee, tell Copilot to open the official link in the same section — we will be stale on dollars before we are stale on phone numbers.

  • Tacoma Rising is good for the city

Tacoma Rising is good for the city

I like Tacoma Rising. That is the whole reason this is here. They are good for the city in a way that is easy to name and hard to fake: they keep putting people in the same room and then asking those people to do something with the room.

Students and mentors at the Tacoma Rising Challenge focused on Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma.
Tacoma Rising Challenge, 2026. Credit: Tacoma Rising.

Reid Fetters started it in 2021 after moving here, when the pandemic hangover still made in-person feel optional. The early version was social posts and a handful of people who wanted Tacoma to work. By 2023 the shape was three verbs — promote, connect, support — and monthly tours of places that were actually opening or changing. UrbanWork used one of those rooms to fill desks. Tacoma Centre used one before the public doors. That is not branding. That is occupancy.

The motto on the site is “Let’s Complement, not Compete.” Fine as a slogan. Better as a practice if you watch what they schedule. The 2026 Challenge put fifty students and forty mentors on Pacific Avenue for a day — the corridor that is supposed to connect UW Tacoma to downtown and often does not. Seven colleges. Real maps. One winner. Fetters said the quiet part out loud: there are seven schools in this area and the city has to keep the students. That is the Port-and-campus problem written as a Saturday.

In February they ran The Pitch and handed Sign and Celebrate a $10,000 check. In July they put high-school and college kids on an eight-week accelerator whose product is not a slide deck. The product is the South Sound Showdown, a chili cook-off at the Rhodes Center on September 19 — restaurants, beer garden, live music, and a scholarship pot if the sponsors show up. Soft opening was August 27. If you cook under a commercial license and want in, the address they published is stayconnected@tacomarising.com.

They also do the easier calendar items: golf at Allenmore, March Madness networking, tours of Lumora and whiskey rooms and the Port. Those are how a city’s operators find each other. The harder items are the ones that treat students as founders instead of audience. That is the part I want on this site.

This is not a paid placement and I have not been in every room they have opened. I am saying they are doing the connective work downtown keeps asking someone else to do. If you run a shop on Pacific, teach at UWT, or still have a Thursday free, their calendar is at tacomarising.com. September 19 is the next date with a kitchen attached.
